Travel is an important method of learning about the rest of the world and finding our own place in it. Exposure to other culture enriches life and enhances understanding among peoples from widely varying nations. It has been an important part of my life since post-college days when I moved to Italy. It became a full-time career a few years ago when I began to photograph and write guidebooks about the places I traveled most often and knew best.
I have authored and co-authored books about Italy, Portugal, Scandinavia, New England, Eastern Canada, and the Chesapeake Bay area and articles about South America as well. To me, travel is all about experiences, so it’s not surprising that several of these books are adventure guides featuring my own favorite sports of skiing, kayaking, mountain climbing and hiking. But I also look for other experiences, especially cultural and historical ones. I enjoy music, opera, architecture, art and places with an interesting story in their past, and I enjoy photographing and writing about all these subjects.
My photographs illustrate most of my books, and this allows me to look at places in different ways – through the camera lens and with a writer’s eye.
My latest books:
It Happened in New Hampshire (history)
New Hampshire Off the Beaten Path
Adventure Guide to Canada’s Atlantic Provinces
Adventure Guide to the Chesapeake Bay
Enchantment of the World: Russia (children’s)
Cities of the World: Toronto (children’s)
